BRUSSELS: Ambassadors of EU member states will meet on Tuesday morning to discuss possible sanctions against Russia in response to the formal recognition of Ukraine’s two breakaway regions, with possible options for a limited embargo, an EU official said.
An EU diplomat separately said the meeting would be an “information point” for ambassadors, but also considered how to act in a statement issued by EU leaders on Monday that the bloc would “respond with sanctions against those involved in this illegal activity.”
EU officials say some member states want to limit sanctions in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s move in eastern Ukraine, while others want to see the full range of sanctions discussed in recent weeks that will now be introduced.
The official said a meeting of EU leaders could be held to discuss the bloc’s response, but that no decision had yet been made.
