NEW DELHI: With the sharp fall in the Kovid case in vote-centric Uttar Pradesh and Manipur, the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday revoked its 50% attendance cap for rallies and public meetings, allowing roadshows, even as epidemic rules. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) will apply.
An EC order states that political parties and candidates can hold meetings and rallies without restriction on using only 50% of the venue space subject to SDMA regulations. The SDMA rules will also apply to roadshows, which may be organized with the prior permission of the district authority.
The latest relaxation in the EC’s campaign ban on covid is due to updated data from the Union Health Secretary, which has reduced the number of daily cases in the country to 13,400, down from 3.47 lakh on January 21, 2022. In UP and Manipur in particular, the daily case has dropped from a maximum of 16,700 cases recorded on January 22, 2022 to just 500.
