UK to immediately impose hard economic sanctions on Russia, says PM Boris Johnson

LONDON: Britain will immediately impose tough economic sanctions on Russia after President Vladimir Putin ordered the deployment of troops in two isolated areas of eastern Ukraine, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday.
“We will immediately set up an economic sanctions package,” Johnson told reporters.
The sanctions, he said, “target not only Donbass and the entities of Luhansk and Donetsk, but also Russia – targeting Russian economic interests as much as possible.”
Putin will see that Russia has “seriously miscalculated” if Russia invades Ukraine, Johnson said, adding that Moscow appears to be leaning towards a full-scale invasion.
Johnson chaired a meeting of Britain’s National Emergency Security Committee on Tuesday morning.
“I think the tragedy of the current situation is that President Putin is surrounded by like-minded advisers who tell him that Ukraine is not the right country. And I think he is going to find that he has made a serious miscalculation,” Johnson said. He told reporters after the meeting.
